Benvenuto Brunello 2018

The Classic Wine Selections team just returned from Benvenuto Brunello in Montalcino (February 16th – February 18th), a traditional event for the wine trade and wine lovers. Approximately 200 producers who are part of the Consorzio di Brunello di Montalcino were in attendance.  In addition to tasting the new release of 2013 Brunello di Montalcino, 2016 Rosso di Montalcino, and 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, the event gave us the opportunity to visit our producers, reconnect with old friends, and make new friends.

Some of our observations:

  • 2013 is a good, solid vintage (Consorzio rates it 4/5 stars).
  • 2014 is proving to be a difficult decision for many producers.  Admittedly, the vintage was a great challenge.  The decision facing producers is   whether to produce a Brunello in 2014.
  • From barrel tasting, 2015 will be spectacular.  2016 is showing great promise as well.
  • Both 2015 and 2016 have been awarded 5/5 stars by the Consorzio.  2017, although only in the barrel for a few months, seems to be off to a good start.  Due to the extremely  hot and dry 2017 summer, production is down overall 20-30%, but quality is very good.  I would plan for higher prices in 2017.
  • 2016 Rosso di Montalcino.  Another solid value, fresh and fruity, from the 5 star vintage.
  • 2012 Riserva’s are worthy of the 2012  5/5 star vintage.  Most, however, still need a couple more years, but great potential.
